Luego de los descubrimientos de Mendel, Boveri y Sutton comprobaron independientemente la veracidad de sus conclusiones y finalmente quedo formulado el concepto de gen como unidad básica de la herencia, asociando de este modo la transferencia de los factores mendelianos (alelos) con la segregación de cromosómica durante la división celular.
