GM crops can be described as the variety of crop plants which have been modified through the recombinant DNA technology.
GMO'S are used in agricultural crops to :
1) Increase the amount of nutrients in a crop plant: As the population of humans is rising enormously, we need more food to survive on. The production of GM crops allows more food with better nutrition quality to be produced in a shorter time. For example, Golden rice is a GM crop which has increased levels of Vitamin A in it to meet the needs of Vitamin A in under-developed countries.
2) Produce Disease Resistant Crops: GM crops are a way to produce disease-resistant crops which will be disease-free and hence help in raising the economy. For example, orange trees are being produced by this method which is resistant to citrus greening disease.
3) Pest Resistant crops: Growing pests resistant plants are one of the major concerns of recombinant crops as a wide variety of pests infect the natural plants. For example, BT cotton is being produced which is resistant to the combat bollworm pest.
