There are two types of diabetes: insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and non-insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) caused by a recessive trait. Although both types appear to have
a genetic component, the genetic role in non-insulin-dependent diabetes is much greater

Debbie is a 40 year old Jamaican whose grandmother and grandfather on her mother’s side both have
diabetes. The Grandfather is overweight and has (IDDM) while her grandmother is in shape and has
(NIDDM). Debbie’s mother Laura and her two brothers Leighton and Lance do not have (NIDDM) or
(IDDM) Debbie married Allan and have three children Alana, Alexia, and Devin who was born with
(NIDDM) she is also pregnant with her fourth child.
A. What is the percentage probability that:
i. Debbie’s fourth child will be a girl
ii. That the fourth child will have NIDDM
