Waste stream - The total flow of solid waste from homes, businesses, institutions, and manufacturing plants that is recycled,
burned, or disposed of in landfills.
Communities have adopted many programs to reduce the waste stream in their area, specifically, to cut back on the waste that is
being disposed of in landfills. These are examples of community programs being implemented throughout the U.S. ALL BUT ONE is an
excellent way to help reduce the amount of materials entering a landfill.

Los Angles, CA: established a Cooperative Purchasing Program enabling
government entities, including school districts, to purchase recycled-
content bond paper.
Seattle, WA: prohibits the disposal of certain recyclables, paper, cardboard,
glass, plastic, and aluminum cans, from residential, commercial, and self-
haul garbage.
Fort Collins, CO: requires private haulers to provide curbside recycling to
residents at no charge, apply volume-based pricing, and offer a range of
trash can size options.
Austin, TX: The Universal Recycling and Composting Ordinance requires all
properties will be required to provide recycling and composting services to
their tenants and employees.
