In the process of respiration, gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the lungs, other body parts & systems and the environment .
After inhalation of oxygen, its concentration increases in the alveoli (air sacs of the lungs) and becomes greater than the oxygen concentration in the blood stream. Due to this concentration differences, Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli to the blood stream. Likewise, carbon dioxide diffuses from blood stream to alveoli due to concentration difference. Now this CO2 is expelled out of alveoli by the process of exhalation .
