If you see a galaxy from a telescope, you'll just see how the image is coming to us. However, that galaxy how it actually is today, may not even be existant anymore. This is the effect of the speed of light. Think of it as sound. As a plane flies by at great speed, the sound drags. So does light. As light travels through space, its very slow. So, whatever we see out in space, is history. Not whatever is happening now.
