The Sherman Anti-Trust Act was the first Federal act to stop all monopolistic business practices. This act was passed in 1890 to ensure monopolies would be broken up within the market and allow other businesses to enter. There have been revisions overtime however there are core federal anti-trust laws that are still in effect.
