Ernest Rutherford carried out the gold foil experiment in order to build on the work of J. J Thompson, who proposed the plum pudding model of the atom. In his experiment, Rutherford used alpha particles, which are positively charged to bombard a thin gold foil. He noticed that most of the particles pass through the foil, while some are deflected and a few bounced back. This observation was contrary to Rutherford expectations based on Thompson atomic model and it was through this experiment that Rutherford discovered the existence of nucleus in the atom.
