'Dispersion of Light' can be defined as the splitting of white light when it passes through a glass prism into its constituent spectrum of colors (i.e. violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red). Dispersion figuratively means 'distribution' and hence.Upon passage through the prism, the white light is separated into its component colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. The separation of visible light into its different colors is known as dispersion. When a light wave impinges upon an atom of the material, it is absorbed by that atom.Dispersion of light occurs when white light is separated into its different constituent colors because of refraction and Snell's law. White light enters a prism on the left, then is separated according to wavelength into a rainbow pattern.Prisms are specially shaped so that light passing through them bends. Some colors bend more than others as they pass through the prism, so they split apart. This means that a beam of white light going into a prism comes out as a spectrum of different colors.
Hope that was helpful.Thank you!!!
