The elements in group 1A are soft metals that are highly electro positive. They are univalent and have the general outermost electron configuration of ns1.

They tarnish upon exposure to the atmosphere and most of them catch fire when they are dropped in water.

They form basic oxides which react with acids to form salt and water. Their trioxonitarate (V) decomposes with difficulty to yield dioxonitrate III and oxygen.

The ease of formation of univalent positive ions increases down the group. The atomic and ionic sizes also increases down the group.

The  melting and boiling points of group 1 elements decrease down the group. They most form ionic compounds of high melting and boiling points.
