so we know that 12.011 is carbon so lets multiply (7 x 12.011) because in this compound/substance there are seven carbons. we get 84.077
now lets do the same thing with hydrogen, remember look at the periodic table and we see the mass for hydrogen is 1.008 so multiply that by 8 because theres 8 hydrogens in this compound and we get 8.064
do the same for the rest of the elements: chlorine, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur add it all up and we get: 297.728 amu (atomic mass units)
ok so now we are looking for mass percentage of H so remember we found that it was 8.064 amu of hydrogen in this compound?
