So, when learning a new language is important to avoid translating word by word and rather learn idea-by-idea, that way we can learn how the expression goes in the other language, and express ourselves the right way. So, what my "hunch" tells me is that these expressions can not be translated word by word as they lose their meaning, but rather we have to learn the expression that conveys the same idea.
