If someone you love only conditionally loves you, it can be devastating. I had a relative who did not approve of some of my decisions as a young adult. He withdrew from my life. He didn't make nasty statements to me or talk about me to others. He merely quit being a part of my life. I could call him and he would be polite, but that was as far as the relationship ever went. It changed my life in that I have made sure that when I love someone it has no strings attached. Indeed it was the biggest lesson in my life.
