Existe una sustancial diferencia entre el lenguaje denotativo y el lenguaje utilizado en un texto poético.
El lenguaje denotativo implica un relato directo, explicito y claro de una situación, evento o persona, es decir, es una descripción sin rodeos ni figuraciones, utilizando un lenguaje que describe de forma realista y clara lo que se está diciendo.
En cambio, el lenguaje utilizado en un texto poético carece de estas características, siendo un idioma mucho mas figurado, adornado con componentes artísticos que, si bien dan al texto una mayor belleza visual y causan deleite en el lector, no son útiles a los fines prácticos, ya que incluso pueden llegar a confundir el mensaje que se quiere dar.
