One main idea in a thesis and one main idea in a topic sentence

The thesis is what drives the whole entire paper that you're most likely writing, therefore you would at the very minimum would want at least one idea in the thesis.
As for the topic sentence, that sets up the premise for the entire paragraph. A series of topic sentences wouldn't get the paragraph anywhere- you would just be prefacing a nonexistent paragraph if it was just topic sentences. The ideas are what drive a paragraph to be solid.
