A phrase is a group of words containing either a subject or a predicate, but not both.
Further Explanation:
Phrases are the group of words which do not consist of a subject or a verb. The subject which is intended to complete the action is not present in the phrase as in a clause. When the phrases are put in the sentence, they add meaning to the sentence. But independently they do not have any complete meaning. A phrase does not include a subject, or a verb, or both. The complete idea remains missing in the phrase. A phrase is thus considered to be a fragment.
Phrases are of three types: noun phrase, verb phrase, and prepositional phrase.
A clause is a group of words which consists of a subject and a verb and conveys meaning through it. Clauses are of two types: independent clause and subordinate clause. Independent clauses are complete in themselves while the subordinating clauses are not complete. Compound sentences are the sentences in which there are two or more than two independent clauses. The clauses are joined together to form a sentence by the help of the coordinators.
