ESSAY: "THE LADY, OR THE TIGER?" Responding to literature is one of the best ways of showing that you understand the story. For this exercise you will suspend your disbelief and respond to the story as if it were true.

Here is your goal for this assignment:

Respond to a short story

Imagine that the story "The Lady or the Tiger?" is true. Write a paragraph of at least 125 words giving your own opinion about one of the following questions. Use evidence from the text to support your opinion.

1. Was the king's system of trying criminals a fair one by modern standards? Why or why not?
2. If the princess had been a Christian rather than a barbarian, what would she have done? What Christian principle is involved?
3. If the princess had made the choice you think she would have made, what would probably have happened in the next scene? Consider how the princess would feel as well as the events you think might take place.
4. Can you think of any examples from daily life or the news of the day that show conflicts caused by jealousy?
You will be graded on the following criteria:

1. Clearly state your position and support it with evidence from "The Lady, or the Tiger?" Use specific quotes. Remember to document your quotes properly, using MLA format (click here to review the Style Guide).
2. Make sure your paragraph contains one main idea and supporting details. Use complete sentences including compound and complex sentences.
3. Make sure your essay contains no errors in conventions such as spelling or grammatical errors, and is at least 125 words long.
