The Quest is an archetype found in many narratives. In this type of story, a hero is usually the main character. He tends to exist in the regular world until he receives a mission that is outside his normal activities. This mission is adventurous and extremely important. It is significant both to the world, and to the hero's self-development. The quest also tends to be full of ordeals that the hero is able to overcome.
An example of this type of narrative is The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien. The book follows an average hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who has to find a treasure guarded by Smaug the dragon. The quest is a transformational journey for the hobbit, who is able to earn maturity, bravery and wisdom.
