The narrator of this excerpt can be described as optimistic.
Explanation:
The narrator may be friendly, or intelligent but that is not written on this excerpt. From the excerpt we can perceive him as a possitive narrator trying to look at the situation from the best possible perspective. Even though the narrator does not like the railroad yet, he states that eventually he will like the railroad. He also says that Sherman will like him. The use of "will" makes it clear that the person is sure something possitive is going to come out of the situation. The language used by the narrator is not thw one used by a wealthy narrator as portrayed in the phrase: "another day, another dollar". The situation the narrator is in is not the best but he is looking at it from the best perspective he can.
