The Taíno were an Arawak people who were said to be the principal inhabitants of most areas of Jamaica, Puerto Rico & Cuba, during the time of the European contact around the 15th century.  

The Taino people have not been in good terms with their neighboring Carib tribes (that lived in South America) and their relationship deteriorated to the extent that the Taino people got driven to the northeast in the Caribbean and out of what is now South America.  

When the Spaniards arrived, they did not bring women with them and they decided to take Taíno women for their common-law wives. Taino women were regularly violated sexually by the Spaniards. Generally, the Taino people were not treated well by these Europeans.
