He suffers from the loss of his children until they return to him.
Explanation:
The Brothers Grimm's famous children story of "Hansel and Gretel" tells the fairy-tale story of two siblings who used their wit and courage to overcome obstacles.
Hansel and Gretel are two children who live with their woodcutter father and evil stepmother. Due to their impoverished condition, their stepmother forced her husband to leave the children in the woods so that will not have to feed more mouths. Their father, though reluctant, did it anyway on the second attempt. The two siblings who were lost came upon an old witch's hut and entered it, looking for food. The witch kept them captive, making Gretel work and feeding Hansel to make him fat for her to eat later.
But on the day she decided to eat Hansel, she ended being tricked herself and she was instead killed, burned actually. The brother-sister duo found treasures in the house and taking them, went back to their hut. There, they found their father looking sad and in poverty. he told them their stepmother had died and he had never come to terms with his actions on them. He had regretted his decision to leave them in the forest that day. His conflict of deserting his children had made him a better man in the end.
