Marmee meant that
Meg should not allow the opinion of people who were not worth it to define her. She also meant that she could earn the praise of distinguished people by being herself. In chapter 9 of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, there is an episode where Meg visited the house of the Mofatt's. Being from a lowly background, her dress was not as expensive and pretty as those of the other girls. Her dress was even referred to as a tarlatan by Mrs. Mofatt. All of these upset her so much that she narrated the incidence to her mother.
Her mother advised her to recognize and acknowledge praise from worthy people. She also explained that she could attract the attention of highly-placed people by remaining confident.
