As is stated in the novel almost everyone lives inside the Oasis and millions of people are trying to find the egg. The best way to do so is to study up on the life of Halliday, the creator of the contest. This shows that the world Wade lives in is essentially focused on fame, glory, and escaping the reality they live in.
