Irony: A difference or contrast.
Example: Verbal Irony / Situational Irony / Dramatic Irony
- Situational Irony: Opposite of what you expect.
Example: The teacher failed the test.
- Verbal Irony: Sarcasm;when someone says the opposite of what they mean or intend.
Example: When your friend loses their pencil and you say "It's the end of the world." (This might not make sense.)
Personification: Giving human characteristics to nonhuman things.
Example: The sun is smiling brightly outside.

An anology is a comparison between two (mainly unlike) terms in order the reader better understand. These can include common colloquialisms/cliches like "Life is like a box of chocolates..."
Imagery is a stylistic device used by authors regarding the tone. The words expressed by the author allow the audience to visualize the scenario.
There are 3 different types of irony: dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony.
1) Verbal irony is when someone says something opposite of is expected/the truth, often for sarcastic purposes.
Example: When a man comes home from work as a mechanic and is visibly dirty. The verbal irony would be his wife saying, "Wow, don't you look like the cleanest individual in the world."
2) Situational irony is when something happens which is opposite of what is expected.
Example: In the book Fahrenheit 451, the "firemen" create fires as opposed to what they do in modern society: stop fires.
3) Dramatic irony is when the audience has more information than a character does.
Example: In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead but we know that she is not actually dead. She appears that way as she ingested a sleeping potion
As its name implies, a monologue is a speech conducted by only one person (hence the prefix, mono-)
An oxymoron is when two terms which contrast are placed in conjunction. Make sure to not confuse this with a paradox which the exact same thing but deals with an entire phrase. An example of an oxymoron could, "Vegan Meatballs."
Personification is when human-like qualities are applied to inanimate objects. An example of this could be, "The leaves danced to the rhythm of the wind." Since leaves can't actually dance, this is a personification.
A solilioquoy is when a character talks to themselves about personal issues, feelings, et cetera. This is different from a monologue as a monologue mainly deals with the character referencing other characters as opposed to themselves.
I hope this helped!
