Most likely, you've learned in science classes that atoms are the building blocks of matter. You've probably also learned that atoms are made up of subatomic particles: protons, electrons, and neutrons. What you may not know, however, is that scientists have discovered particles that are even smaller than subatomic particles. This discovery was made through the use of particle colliders, or atom smashers.
Atom smashers take subatomic particles and accelerate them to a speed that is faster than the speed of sound and almost as fast as the speed of light. When atoms moving at this speed smash into one another, they break apart into their internal components. Scientists study these incredibly small parts to better understand the fundamental structure of matter. Through this study, scientists hope to gain insight into the biggest mystery of them all: the origin of the universe!
