Read the excerpt from “Harriet Tubman: A Life of Toil and Triumph.”
During her years of work as a nurse, Harriet was also asked to spy for the Second South Carolina Volunteers. The Volunteers were certainly rewarded for their belief in Harriet’s abilities. Time and again, she traveled through Rebel territory and returned with key information about cotton storehouses and ammunition holds.
Then in 1863, Harriet carried out her most dangerous and daring mission of all. She conspired with Colonel James Montgomery. Together they developed a plan to free enslaved persons and stop Rebel supply lines. On an early June morning, Harriet led the charge. The raid was a grand success, with no loss of soldiers and seven hundred fifty enslaved persons freed.
Based on the excerpt, what was the mission of the Second South Carolina Volunteers?
to nurse the Rebel soldiers injured in war
