Reread this passage from Josh Billings's lecture on "Snails, Snakes, and Babies." The striped snake is one of the slipperiest jobs that nature ever turned loose.
They travel on the lower side of themselves, and can slip out of sight like blowing out a candle.
They were made for some good purpose, but I never have been informed for what, unless it
was to have their heads smashed.
They are said to be innocent, but they have got a bad reputation, and all the innocence in the
world won't cure a bad reputation.
Which style of comedy does the passage demonstrate?
the frequent use of folksy sayings
O a reliance on multiple-meaning words
O appeals to readers' emotions
eloquent, complex arguments
