Based on Act I, of "The Tragedy of Macbeth", by William Shakespeare, Macbeth's plans and actions seem to be motivated most of all by his wife's encouragement. Lady Macbeth has no doubt as to what is to be done. Macbeth must be king and she encourages him to murder King Duncan. When Macbeth wants to go no further she says that he will only be a man if he murders the king.
