In "The House of Seven Gables," by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the theme of appearance versus reality has affected the actions of Hepzibah and Judge Pyncheon.
First, Hepzibah is a generous and kind woman who is devoted to her brother Clifford and gives pocket money to her little customer Ned. However, she is quite shortsighted and has a constant angry look in her face, which keeps her customers away, and even her own brother.
Secondly, Judge Pyncheon has a charming smile which hides his cruelty, and he keeps putting on a happy expression even when his wickedness becomes obvious.
To sum up, both characters represent how deceitful apppearances can be.

From Alfred Hitchcock’s examples, it is clear that he expects readers to be familiar with his films. However, some readers may not have seen Hitchcock’s movies. From the examples in paragraph 3 and 4 I can infer that he created bloody movies full of violence. It states, “A man has been murdered,” and “slugs him into insensibility.” From these phrases you can certainly conclude the type of movies he made. However, in paragraph 6 Alfred Hitchcock says for himself, “For 17 years I have been making pictures described alternatively, as thrillers, dark mysteries, and chillers, yet I have never actually directed a whodunit or a puzzler. “ Here he confirms the type of movies he created.
