They had been taught there entire lives to fit in and they had always been reprimanded for their actions. They had been taught to curb any impulse that would set them apart form the group.

Premila
Explanation:
The story By Any Other Name is basically about two Indian siblings named Santha and Premila who were registered in an Anglo-American school. While there, they were mistreated by the English teacher. They bore several discriminations against them including being given the back seat in the classroom. They were also given English names because the English teacher said that she could not pronounce their names.
Premila was especially provoked when the teacher kept her apart from others during a test because in her opinion, Indian students cheated. This made Premila storm out of the classroom and take her sister along with her. Santha was not particularly moved about this.
