(The Great Gatsby Chapter 8) Look at the very last line of the chapter: “The holocaust was complete.” This book (from 1925) was written before the Nazis came to power in Germany (in 1933), and so also before their systematic murder of Jewish people and others--what we know of as the Holocaust. Look up the earlier the meaning of “holocaust.” Then explain why Fitzgerald uses this term to describe the events of chapter 8 (and actually the end of chapter 7 as well).
