There are many examples in Romeo and Juliet that show us what friendship was like during this time period. Some of these highlight values that we would consider important in a friendship nowadays.

For example, the character of Mercutio is an extremely good friend to Romeo. We can see that, just like in the present, loyalty was important during this period. We learn that based on the fact that Mercutio is loyal to the Montagues in their feud against the Capulet. We can also see that Mercutio is a good friend to Romeo because he supports him when Romeo suffers from unrequited love in the case of Rosaline.

Another example is that of Juliet and her nurse. Although the two women are not equal, their reltionship can still be seen as a friendship. The nurse listens to all of Juliet's worries and secrets. Moreover, she helps Juliet meet Romeo, and initially encourages to pursue her true love. All of these are traits that we would consider important in a friendship nowadays.
