What does it mean to “run a sill” (86)? Why would this be frowned upon—especially in the early 1930s? What does the suggestion that Atticus’s defense of a black man is “like someone runnin’ a sill” tell you about the racial tension in the town?

A few years ago, I was at a language institute waiting for my Uber to come pick me up. There was a pregnant woman working as a secretary at that institute.
Earlier that day, she had had a fight with another woman who worked there as a teacher. Apparently, the secretary's daughter also attended the institute and had classes with that specific teacher. There was some sort of misunderstanding between them concerning the teacher's attitude in the classroom and they ended up arguing about it.
When the fight was over, the secretary began to feel sick. Her hands were shaking and she eventually fell to the floor. The cleaning lady's only reaction was screaming and, since there was no one else around at that moment, I had to do something about it.
I approached them, asked to lady to stop screaming. I told her that sort of reaction wouldn't help the other woman. She immediately controlled herself. Then I asked the secretary what she wanted me to do: should I take her in the Uber with me to a hospital or should I call an ambulance? She chose to come with me and I stayed at the hospital with her until she was seen by a doctor.
