Stanza 1
The speaker, who is unnamed, recalls listening to a "Negro" play the piano and sing "The Weary Blues" one night on Lenox Avenue. He describes the performer as sitting on a "rickety stool" under the dull glow of a single gas light. This bluesman is swaying to and fro to the music, playing the piano like a "musical fool" and singing "from a black man's soul." The speaker is moved by the music and shouts appreciative interjections: "O Blues!" "Sweet Blues!" The bluesman begins to sing a melancholy song in a deep voice. He croons over his loneliness and resolves he will stop feeling sorry for himself. He will forget his troubles by putting them "on the shelf."
Stanza 2
The bluesman thumps his foot on the floor to the beat of the music as he plays a few more chords and sings about having "the weary blues." There is just no satisfying him anymore—his happiness is gone, and he wishes he had died. The speaker imagines the bluesman sings the song until the break of day. Then the musician goes home to bed and sleeps deeply with the song still in his head.
