The answer is that the poem called "The rhinoceros" and the people living in the town that were transforming, actually they were nazis; more and more people were turning to them and "transforming" into nazis in the poem. The only ones that were "immune" to this were the ones that were not swayed, and they were hunted down and attacked even by their lovers and family members.
