Imagery enhances the poem by adding detail and a sense of wonder and drama. This can be seen when the speaker says “When the Scarlett cardinal tells”. This creates an image of a fantastic bird, not just a regular one. Also, with the statement “And poppies flame in the rye”, there is a dramatic flare added. These examples add much more interest to the poem instead of just it dragging along.
