In the job world, a “layoff” means the act of dismissing an employee.  This is not the same as being fired because being fired indicates subpar performance in some regard. A layoff can happen simply if a company is looking to save money regardless of employee performance or even if a project you happen to be working on is ending or being eliminated through no fault of your own.  What it means to be prepared for a layoff is to be ready to be looking for another job to replace the one you are potentially about to lose.   When one is looking for a job, one does so with a résumé, which is a current list of previous jobs held, education level, skills, and qualifications.  Thus, to prepare for possible layoffs, one would most certainly want to make sure his or her résumé is up to date.
