The Napoleonic defeat and surrender in May 1814 ended 25 years of nearly continuous war in Europe. In the aftermath, Austrian statesman Klemens von Metternich chaired a meeting of European ambassadors known as the Congress of Vienna.
The puspose of this Congress was to provide long-term peace for Europe by settling the issues that had arisen during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. It aimed at resizing the main European powers so they could balance each other and remained at peace. However, the Congress has been criticized for suppressing emerging national and liberal movements and benefit traditional monarchies. It is also seen as a trigger for the rise and spread of nationalism.
