The production and export of cotton became the backbone of the economy of the American South almost from its very beginnings and it kept being one of the most important agricultural products throughout most of the American Civil War. In fact, throughout most of the 19th century, the American South depended entirely on its production of cotton and the export of this product to Great Britain, who were the biggest consumers of it. Thus, while before the 1800´s production and export of cotton ranged in just a few thousand bales because the production depended entirely on slave handwork, when the cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney around 1793, in Georgia, this production and export jumped into more than just a few hundred thousand bales. And by 1840 the numbers increased until the production settled around the 1.3 and 1.4 million bales. Later on, in 1860, this production would spike even further to more than 3 million bales. The most appropriate answer here then would be that by 1840, the United States was producing around 1.3 million bales a year to export them to Great Britain and use them also for home manufacturing.
