Maryland's new settlers hoped to do the same. Lord Baltimore made generous land grants to anyone who brought over servants, women, and children. who took advantage of Lord Baltimore's offer of land. arrived in Maryland in 1638 with nine male servants.After his death, George Calvert's son, Cecil Calvert, inherited the title of Lord Baltimore and carried on the work of settling Maryland. After a period of violence and persecution against Catholics, Cecil wrote the Maryland Toleration Act, which mandated freedom of religion for Christians in the colony.
Although the settlers in the Maryland Colony grew a variety of crops, the major export was tobacco. The climate in the Maryland Colony was much warmer than in the New England and Middle Colonies. This made it easier to grow crops year round but the warmer temperatures made it easier for disease to spread.
