Amethod in which voters can directly vote for their party's candidates introduced by robert la follette. previously, republicans and democrats nominated candidates in conventions ruled by party bosses. this new method was common by 1915. however, party bosses still maintained power by confusing voters and splitting the anti-machine vote. also, southern states used this system as a way to keep blacks from voting
