James Long was a doctor, merchant and an American filibuster who believed and fought for the freedom of Texas from Spain. About 300 men joined him in 1819 for the expedition to get Texas to become "Republic of Texas". He wanted the pirate, Jean Lafitte to help him but Lafitte refused.
Long was later captured and executed by Spanish troops in Mexico City. His wife, Jane Long remained in Texas taking care of a boarding house until she died.
