Since the stories were done through songs and sung by troubadours (chorals who would move from town to town), the songs were written down. Likewise to this, legends and religious stories were also written down in one's native languages or could be sung by the "troups." The Middle Ages marked the first period where vernacular literature started versus writing and reading in Latin.
