It was already an important trade route for silk trade. During the 'age of discovery' in the 1500s the Indian Ocean was being explored by sailors to find a route around Africa.[1]
The Indian Ocean, the third largest saline-water body of the world, derives its name from India. A part of the World Ocean body, the Indian Ocean covers 20% of the Earth’s main water surface, which attributes to a total of one-fifth of the world’s ocean area.[2]
However, the warmth of the ocean resists the growth of phytoplankton, except for a few spots here and there, across the water body. Indian Ocean is the warmest ocean in the world. Indian Ocean is known as 'Ratnakara' in the ancient Sanskrit literature. Hence, life thriving in the Indian Ocean is limited.[3]

1- THE DELIAN LEAGUE WAS FORMED (477 BC):
This organization was a maritime military alliance, created and controlled at first by the Athenian statesman Aristides (who wrote the statutes and set them in motion), in 477 BC, at the end of the Medical Wars, to be able to defend against possible and new attacks of the Persians. It was also the result of the loss of hegemony of Sparta, to which Athens took command of the expeditions.
2- THE PELOPONNESIAN WAR BEGAN (431 BC):
The Peloponnesian War (431 BC - 404 BC) was a military conflict in Ancient Greece that pitted the cities of the Delian League (led by Athens) and the Peloponnesian League (headed by Sparta).
3- A PLAGUE BROKE OUT IN ATHENS (430 BC):
The Plague of Athens was a devastating epidemic that affected mainly the city-state of Athens in the year 430 BC, in the second year of the Peloponnesian War. It is believed that it must have arrived in Athens through Piraeus, the port of the city and the only source of food and supplies. The city-state of Sparta and much of the eastern Mediterranean were also affected by the epidemic, although to a lesser extent. The plague returned twice, in 429 BC and in the winter of 426-425 BC.
4- ATHENS LOST ITS RULER AND ITS POWER (404 BC):
The Peloponnesian War changed the map of Ancient Greece. Athens, the main city before the war, was virtually reduced to a state of subjugation, while Sparta was established as the greatest power in Greece. The economic cost of the war was felt throughout Greece; a state of poverty spread through the Peloponnese, while Athens found itself completely devastated and could never recover its former prosperity.
