The American government forced natives away from the lands they had settled in and pushed them further West. Fighting broke out between the two groups, and generally the natives were on the losing side. Many were killed off and starved until the submitted to the wishes of the white settlers.

Federal Indian policy establishes the relationship between the United States Government and the Indian Tribes within its borders. The Constitution gives the federal government primary responsibility for dealing with tribes. Some scholars divide the federal policy toward Indians in six phases: coexistence, removal and reservations, assimilation, reorganization, termination, and self-determination.
