At first, like many others, French rulers wanted to gain more wealth and power. Back then, claiming land was one way to achieve this goal. And, like many other colonists, the french people that went to North America wanted a better life. In 1607, Champlain left Port Royal and sailed back to France to put his plans of colonizing North America in motion. He returned in the following year with settlers. The settlement at the shores of Sr. Lawrence River allowed Champlain to keep his fur trade. That settlement received the name of Quebec.
