In 1893, a group of planters and businessmen (mostly American citizens) launched a coup against
the monarch of an island nation. After setting up a new government, they proposed to be annexed by
the United States. This plan was turned down by President Grover Cleveland at the time. In 1898,
during the midst of the Spanish-American War, U.S. President William McKinley annexed the island
nation, arguing that the territory was vital to the U.S. economy and would serve as a strategic base to
better protect American interests in Asia.
