In the Iran Contra Affair --- Reagan ordered the CIA to sell arms to Iran using Israel as a "middle-man", and then use the profits to fund the Contras (anti-
communists in Nicaragua). This allowed the U.S. to save the hostages, and gave Reagan a way to create funding for containment in Central America.
