Following the end of military rule, Chile elected a civilian government.

The first democratic elections after the Pinochet dictatorship took place in December 1989.

Patricio Aylwin was the first democratically elected president after the coup d'état in Chile in 1973, in which Salvador Allende was overthrown and the military dictatorship headed by Augusto Pinochet Ugarte was established. Thus, Aylwin's term began the period known as the Transition to Democracy and the first of the four consecutive governments of the Concertacion (Coalition of Parties for Democracy).
