1.The first law, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system. The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of any isolated system always increases.
What do they mean to you?
allows us to know how well an energy system performs in terms of the quality of the energy.
How do they affect you?
The first law of thermodynamics states that energy is conserved even when its form is changed, as for instance from mechanical energy to heat. By contrast, the second law of thermodynamics allows us to know how well an energy system performs in terms of the quality of the energy.
For any system, energy transfer is associated with mass crossing the control boundary, external work, or heat transfer across the boundary. These produce a change of stored energy within the control volume.
How do they affect ecosystems?
The First Law of Thermodynamics states that during any. biological, physical, or chemical process, energy can neither be. created nor destroyed. The second law of thermodynamics states that, during the transfer of energy, some energy is always lost as heat; thus, less energy is available at each higher trophic level. Pyramids of organisms may be inverted or diamond-shaped because a large organism, such as a tree, can sustain many smaller organisms.
